The new non-stop service strengthens connectivity between India’s financial capital and one of Asia’s most important business hubs.

Air India has officially launched Mumbai Tokyo Haneda flights, expanding its presence in East Asia and strengthening air links between India and Japan. The airline commenced the new non-stop service on June 15, adding Mumbai to its growing network of direct international destinations.

The new route complements Air India’s existing Delhi-Tokyo Haneda operations and gives travellers from western India direct access to Japan’s capital. At the same time, it reinforces the airline’s strategy of expanding connectivity across key Asian markets.

Strengthening India-Japan connectivity

Air India will operate Mumbai Tokyo Haneda flights four times a week using its Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft. The service creates a direct link between two major economic centres and offers travellers a more convenient alternative to connecting itineraries through other Asian hubs.

The route also arrives at Tokyo Haneda Airport, which many business travellers prefer because of its proximity to central Tokyo. As a result, passengers can significantly reduce transfer times upon arrival and access the city more efficiently.

A boost for business and leisure travel

The launch comes as demand for travel between India and Japan continues to grow. While the two countries share strong economic ties, air connectivity remains relatively limited compared with other major Asian markets. Consequently, the new service has the potential to stimulate both business and leisure travel.

Furthermore, Air India’s codeshare partnership with ANA allows passengers to connect beyond Tokyo to several Japanese destinations, including Osaka, Sapporo, Hiroshima, Fukuoka, Nagoya, Okinawa, and other cities across the country. This broader network increases the appeal of the new route for both corporate and leisure travellers.

Part of Air India’s Asia expansion

The launch of Mumbai Tokyo Haneda flights forms part of Air India’s wider expansion across Asia. Earlier this year, the airline also announced new international services to Hanoi as it continues to strengthen its network throughout the region.

Meanwhile, the addition of Mumbai as a second Indian gateway to Tokyo reflects the airline’s long-term strategy of building stronger international connectivity from both Mumbai and Delhi. Industry observers expect Air India to continue expanding long-haul services as additional aircraft join the fleet in the coming years.

What the new route means for travellers

For travellers, the biggest advantage is convenience. The non-stop service eliminates the need for lengthy connections and provides direct access between two important business and tourism markets. Additionally, Haneda’s location closer to central Tokyo offers a smoother arrival experience than many alternative airports.

As demand for travel between India and Japan continues to increase, Mumbai Tokyo Haneda flights are expected to play an important role in supporting business travel, tourism, and cultural exchange between the two countries.
