The new India-Nepal UPI NPI remittance corridor enables instant cross-border money transfers and strengthens digital financial connectivity between the two neighbouring countries.

India and Nepal have launched a new cross-border remittance system that links India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with Nepal’s National Payments Interface (NPI), allowing users in both countries to transfer money instantly through mobile banking applications and digital wallets. The initiative marks a significant step forward in regional digital payments and financial connectivity.

The India-Nepal UPI NPI remittance corridor creates a direct connection between the two countries’ fast-payment systems. Users can now send funds in real time without relying on traditional remittance channels, which often involve higher fees and longer processing times.

Faster and simpler cross-border transfers

The new system allows users to transfer money using mobile numbers, UPI IDs, virtual payment addresses, and digital wallets. The process removes the need to share bank account details while offering a more secure and convenient payment experience.

Officials expect the corridor to benefit migrant workers, families, students, travellers, and businesses that regularly move funds between India and Nepal. Real-time settlement means recipients receive money instantly, improving access to funds and reducing delays associated with conventional remittance services.

Strengthening economic ties

The payment linkage was developed through a partnership between NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), the international arm of the National Payments Corporation of India, and Nepal Clearing House Limited (NCHL). Together, the organisations established the infrastructure needed to support seamless person-to-person cross-border payments.

Both countries view the initiative as an important milestone in strengthening economic integration and financial inclusion. The project also aligns with broader international efforts to make cross-border payments faster, more accessible, and more affordable.

Expanding UPI’s international footprint

The launch further extends the global reach of India’s digital payments ecosystem. UPI already supports payment acceptance and partnerships across several international markets, and the Nepal linkage adds another important cross-border corridor within South Asia.

Industry observers expect the corridor to encourage greater adoption of digital payments while simplifying financial transactions for millions of people with personal, business, and family connections across both countries.
