The new JW Marriott Mount Kenya Rhino Reserve Safari Camp combines luxury hospitality, wellness, and conservation within one of Africa’s most important rhino sanctuaries.
JW Marriott has expanded its luxury safari portfolio with the opening of the JW Marriott Mount Kenya Rhino Reserve Safari Camp in Kenya’s Solio Game Reserve. Located between Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Ranges, the new property introduces a wellness-focused safari experience that combines wildlife encounters, conservation, and luxury hospitality. The camp sits within the 45,000-acre Solio Game Reserve, which is internationally recognised for its rhino conservation programme and supports one of Africa’s largest populations of black and white rhinos. The opening reflects growing demand for experience-led travel as luxury travellers increasingly seek meaningful connections with nature alongside high-end accommodation and personalised service. It also strengthens Marriott’s presence within Africa’s growing luxury safari market.

A safari experience centred on wellness
JW Marriott has positioned the property around wellbeing and mindful travel. Guests can join guided game drives, walking safaris, cycling excursions, birdwatching experiences, and photography sessions. These activities allow visitors to explore the reserve’s wildlife and landscapes while spending more time in nature. The property also offers bespoke activities such as helicopter excursions, trout fishing on Mount Kenya, and sunset painting experiences. The focus on wellness extends throughout the guest experience. Alongside outdoor activities, the camp features a Spa by JW, fitness facilities, tranquil wellness spaces, and environments designed to encourage rest and reflection.
Design draws inspiration from the landscape
The camp features 19 tented suites, including a two-bedroom suite, and each accommodation blends into the surrounding landscape while offering views of Mount Kenya, the Aberdare Mountains, waterholes, or the savannah. LW Design has used timber, canvas, natural textures, and locally sourced materials throughout the property. As a result, the design creates a strong connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. Private decks, plunge pools, roll-up canvas walls, and freestanding baths allow guests to remain immersed in the natural environment throughout their stay. The interiors also showcase Kenyan craftsmanship through artwork, textiles, and furnishings created by local artisans.
Conservation remains at the heart of the experience
Solio Game Reserve has played a significant role in rhino conservation for decades. The reserve protects endangered black and white rhinos. It also supports a diverse ecosystem that includes lions, leopards, zebras, gazelles, waterbuck, and more than 300 bird species. Guests can also visit the Solio Rhino Orphanage to learn about rehabilitation and conservation efforts taking place within the reserve. Marriott says the property operates within the reserve’s conservation guidelines and supports responsible tourism practices that help protect wildlife and preserve the surrounding environment.

Dining celebrates local ingredients
Food plays an important role in the guest experience. The property’s signature JW Garden supplies herbs, fruits, vegetables, and edible flowers that chefs incorporate into seasonal menus. Guests can dine at Mavuno restaurant, enjoy cocktails at Ember Bar and Lounge, or participate in immersive culinary experiences such as The Garden Table, which showcases ingredients harvested directly from the property’s gardens. The dining programme reflects a broader hospitality trend in which luxury properties increasingly focus on local sourcing, sustainability, and destination-driven culinary experiences.
Luxury safari travel continues to grow
The opening highlights the rapid growth of Africa’s luxury safari sector. High-net-worth travellers are now increasingly seeking experiences that combine wildlife, conservation, wellness, and personalised hospitality. Hotel brands are responding by expanding into safari destinations that offer strong environmental credentials alongside luxury accommodation. For JW Marriott, the Solio opening strengthens a portfolio that already includes luxury safari experiences in East Africa. For Kenya, it adds another high-end tourism asset to a country that continues to attract travellers seeking wildlife, adventure, and meaningful travel experiences.
