Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport, also known as Bhogapuram Airport, has officially opened in Andhra Pradesh, marking a major milestone for the state’s aviation sector.  Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the ₹5,640-crore greenfield airport in Vizianagaram district. The airport sits around 40 kilometres from Visakhapatnam. Commercial flights will begin on 17 August 2026. The new facility will replace civilian operations at Visakhapatnam Airport. Unlike its predecessor, Bhogapuram serves only civilian traffic. This dedicated infrastructure will improve domestic and international connectivity.

Supporting Growth Across the Region

The airport can handle around six million passengers each year in its first phase. Authorities have also planned future expansion to meet rising demand. The project anchors a larger aerotropolis that will attract investment in logistics, hospitality and commercial development. Better air connectivity will also make Visakhapatnam, Araku Valley and Andhra Pradesh’s Buddhist heritage circuit easier to reach. Faster access will encourage tourism while supporting trade and business travel across North Andhra.

Boosting Investment and Connectivity

Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the airport as a major infrastructure project that will strengthen regional connectivity and economic growth. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu said the airport would attract businesses, create jobs and improve accessibility across the state. He also noted that the project could transform the region in the same way that Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport accelerated growth in Telangana.

Strengthening India’s Aviation Network

Bhogapuram International Airport reflects India’s continued investment in modern aviation infrastructure. Airlines will launch commercial services later this month, opening new opportunities for travellers and businesses alike. The airport will strengthen domestic and international connectivity while supporting tourism, investment and long-term economic development. As passenger demand grows, Bhogapuram International Airport will play an increasingly important role in Andhra Pradesh’s aviation network and India’s expanding airport infrastructure.
